큐브 발명가 에르노 루빅의 탄생 80주년과 루빅 큐브 발명 50주년을 기념하여 2024년에 기획된 <루빅 80/50 마법의 50년> 전시는 전 세계에 창의력과 도전 정신의 상징으로 자리 잡은 루빅 큐브의 탄생과 발전 과정을 소개합니다.
헝가리 모홀리-너지 예술디자인대학교(MOME)가 기획한 동 전시는 도쿄, 뉴욕, 헬싱키를 거쳐 서울에서 네 번째로 개최되며, MOME 교수진과 학생들이 함께 제작한 설치 구조물과 아카이브 자료를 통해 루빅의 교육적·예술적 여정을 조명합니다. 교육자이자 디자이너, 퍼즐 발명가로서의 루빅의 면모를 다각도로 관찰하며 그가 몸담았던 학문적 전통과 교육 철학, 실험 정신의 궤적을 살펴볼 수 있습니다.
또한 전시의 국내 확장성을 더하고자 한국큐브문화진흥회와 협력하여 특수 큐브 컬렉션 파트와 체험존을 구성해 관람객이 직접 큐브를 조작하고 창의력을 펼칠 수 있는 참여형 공간을 마련하였습니다.
이번 전시는 한국과 헝가리 양국의 협력과 문화교류를 상징하는 자리이자 루빅 큐브가 지닌 창의성과 교육, 디자인의 가치를 깊이 있게 조명하는 기회가 될 것입니다.
Rubik 80/50: Fifty Years of Magic is an international traveling exhibition orga- nized to commemorate two milestones: the invention of the Rubik's Cube and the 80th birthday of its creator, Ernő Rubik. It explores the cultural and creative legacy of a puzzle that has become an enduring symbol of ingenuity and intel- lectual challenge.
Initiated by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest, the exhibition has toured Tokyo, New York and Helsinki before arriving in Seoul as its fourth stop. Featuring large-scale installations and archival materials cre- ated by MOME faculty and students, the exhibition offers insights into Rubik's journey as an educator, designer and inventor as well as the academic and experimental environment that shaped his thinking.
To enhance the exhibition's local context, the Korea Foundation and Liszt Insti- tute - Hungarian Cultural Center Seoul have collaborated with the Korea Cube Culture United on a special section featuring rare cube collections and an inter- active zone where visitors can explore the principles-and fun!—of spatial thinking.
Rubik 80/50: Fifty Years of Magic is much more than a marker of a puzzle's anni- versary. Instead, it invites audiences to consider the broader significance of cre- ativity, education and design while serving as a platform for meaningful cultur- al exchange between Korea and Hungary.
