Essen spielt in Korea eine herausragende Rolle, ist nicht nur ein Fest des Genusses, sondern Instrument der zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation, Teil von kultischen Festen, religiösen Zeremonien und wichtiger Teil der TV-Unterhaltungsprogramme wie Muk-bang und Cook-bang. Stars in Korea sind nicht nur Schauspieler oder Sänger, sondern auch VJs und Köche, die vor der Kamera essend und kochend Millionen Zuschauer in der hyper-technologisierten und gleichzeitig vereinsamten Gesellschaft Koreas begeistern.
Zur Ausstellung „The King of Table“ sind fünf Künstler/innen aus Korea, Deutschland und Japan eingeladen, ihre Ideen zur koreanischen Esskultur auszutauschen. Begleitet wird die Schau durch eine Performance-Reihe und einen Artist Talk über die Esskultur Koreas, ihre Tradition und Gegenwart, und über das Performative von Kunst und Essen. Die Gedanken der eingeladenen Künstler kreisen dabei um so unterschiedliche Themen wie Glück, Anthropologie, Ästhetik. Sie erzählen Alltagsgeschichte aus einer globalisierten Welt und thematisieren Konsum- und Gesundheitswahn.
Der Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung ist „Bap Sang“, ein gedeckter Tisch mit Reis und Suppe, feste Bestandteile einer koreanischen Mahlzeit. Unter konfuzianischem Einfluss hatten sich früher Männer und Frauen sowie die Älteren und Jüngeren am „Bap Sang“ getrennt. Koreaner sagen auch, dass die Kindererziehung am gedeckten Tisch stattfindet. Der „Bap Sang“ erzählt von gesellschaftlichen Codes und Machtstrukturen sowie von den komplexen Beziehungen zwischen den Essgewohnheiten der Koreaner und ihrem Verhältnis zur Natur und Umwelt. Er verrät aber auch viel über individuelle Vorlieben und Abneigungen und fängt intime Momente ein. Wie gehen Künstler mit diesen Facetten des „Bap Sangs“ um? Wie decken sie ihre Tische? Wie thematisieren sie die Lust am Essen?

Food plays a prominent role in Korea. Not only does it represent a celebration of pleasure, it is also an instrument of communication between people, part of rituals, religious ceremonies and an important element of entertainment television, such as formats like Mukbang and Cookbang. Not only are actors and singers stars in Korea, but also VJs and cooks, who cook and eat on camera while captivating millions of the country‘s hyper-technologized yet lonely viewers.
For “The King of Table”, five artists from Korea, Germany and Japan are invited to exchange ideas on Korean food culture. There will also be a performance series and an artist talk on traditional and contemporary food culture in Korea, as well as on performative aspects of art and food. The ideas of the invited artists encompass various themes, including happiness, anthropology and aesthetics. They explore the microhistory of a globalised world while addressing hyperconsumerism and the health craze.
The exhibition’s point of departure is Bap Sang, a table set with rice and soup, the basic components of a Korean meal. Earlier on, under the influence of Confucianism, men and women, as well as the elderly and the young, ate separately at Bap Sang. Koreans also say that children receive critical cultural education at Bap Sang, where societal codes and power structures are conveyed, as well as the complex relationships between the eating habits of Koreans and their relationship to nature and the environment. It also reveals much about individual predilections and disinclinations while capturing intimate moments. How do artists address these various facets of Bap Sang? How do they dress their tables? How do they interpret the joy of eating?
